Black Canyon FAQ
How can I access the Black Canyon Water Trail?
There are four access points along the water trail: Hoover Dam, Willow Beach, Placer Cove and Eldorado Canyon (Nelson). Click here for more information.
Are there rapids or whitewater?
Not usually. The river is classified as moving flatwater, however there are strong currents, eddies, boils, and strainers. Wind and waves can make choppy water, and self rescue skills are highly recommended. Knowing what to do in the event of a capsize can make or break your trip.
Which way does the river run?
The Colorado River flows through Hoover Dam from the bottom of Lake Mead. It flows south away from the dam towards Willow Beach into Lake Mohave and continues south through a system of dams to Mexico.
Where can I rent a kayak or canoe?
There are a number of outfitters that provide rentals, delivery, shuttles, and guided services. Willow Beach Marina has paddlecraft rentals available right on the water.
