Black Canyon Restrictions
Black Canyon is one of the most popular and scenic areas at Lake Mead NRA. Several groups, including anglers, kayakers and boaters, value this majestic canyon for different reasons. But what one group values, another group may try to avoid. The National Park Service has developed a calendar-based system enforced by law for sharing this beautiful area during the week.
Year Round
(Sunday & Monday)
The canyon from Willow Beach to Hoover Dam (Black Canyon) will be managed as a primitive zone where people can experience a variety of motor-less recreational opportunities in a natural setting. PWC’s (personal watercraft) and vessels with motors are prohibited on those days.
Fall, Winter & Spring
(Tuesday-Saturday)
The canyon from Willow Beach to Hoover Dam (Black Canyon) will be managed as a semi-primitive zone. PWC’s (personal watercraft) remain prohibited. Boating is restricted to vessels with 65-horsepower engines or less.
Summer
(Tuesday-Saturday)
The canyon from Willow Beach to Hoover Dam (Black Canyon) will be managed as a rural-natural zone. During the busy boating season there are no horsepower restrictions and PWC’s (personal watercraft) are allowed.
Houseboating, water-skiing, and wakeboarding remain prohibited for safety reasons because of the narrow canyon environment.
